1955, 1956 and 1957 Chevrolet Wiring Diagrams – Starting with the 1955 Chevrolet cars and trucks, Chevrolet switched from a six volt to a 12-volt electrical system. Switching from a six volt system to a 12 volt system was a very important step for Chevrolet in 1955. This was the year that the new high compression 1955 Chevrolet 265 Cubic Inch Turbo-Fire V-8 was produced. The higher electrical voltage allowed for smoother running and greater performance of the new high compression engines. Plus more voltage is available for auxiliaries such as heaters, fans and a radio. Quicker starts during cold weather was certainly a plus.
